Abstract

This study focused on figuring out the breadth of vocabulary that the ELED students’ have and the role of their vocabulary size in their reading comprehension ability; and vice versa. Therefore, the aims of this research were: 1) to find out the ELED students’ vocabulary size; and 2) to find out the correlation between the students’ vocabulary size and their reading comprehension ability. This study used one of quantitative research methods, the correlational research, to figure out the answers to the research questions. The samples were 24 third semester ELED students taken from class C and D as the population. To collect the data, which was in the form of test scores, Vocabulary Size Test and Reading Comprehension Test were administered to the research participants. The research findings showed that the students’ vocabulary size was 7895 word families on average; the smallest vocabulary size shown as the finding was 2800 word families and the biggest was 12000 word families. It was also found that the students’ vocabulary size and reading comprehension ability correlated moderately and positively. This means that when the students’ vocabulary size increases, their reading comprehension ability would follow suit; and vice versa.
