Abstract

In learning English, Grammar is one of significant components to mediate the system of written symbol that cannot be avoided. Tenses, preposition, to be, and articles are some aspects of grammar. Preposition is one of the important things in grammar aspects. Even though preposition looks small, short, and insignificant look, it is enough to change the meaning of the sentences entirely. It means, studying preposition seems easy for the students, but many students are often confused in applying it in almost of English skill. Therefore, the students should be careful to use preposition in every sentence that they make. Considering the importance of using English preposition, this study is intended to investigate the ability of the first year students of SMP Negeri 2 Ledok Ombo, Jember, in using preposition. The research design of this study was descriptive quantitative research because the data were analyzed and described in numerical forms. The research population in this study was the first year students’ of SMP Negeri 2 Ledok Ombo, Jember. The total number of population was 118 students’ who were divided into 3 classes (1A-1C). The writer applied simple random sampling and took 30 students for the sample. It meant that the writer took 10 students’ from each class. The instrument of this study was test and it was conducted on November 21st 2009. The result of data analysis showed that the mean score was 55.1, which indicated the ability of first year students’ of SMP Negeri 2 Ledok Ombo, Jember in using preposition was poor.
