Abstract

In accordance with the important of English as a means for communication, ELED at UMM provides the students with Mentoring Program which designed to assist the first year students to enhance their English skill. However, in teaching mentoring program the level of proficiency of each mentee are relatively different. With regards to this issue, the mentor has to discover the technique that suits the most with the students’ condition and need, especially when it comes to teaching English as a foreign language. Hence, this research will only focus on analyzing the teaching technique implemented by mentors in Mentoring Program of ELED at UMM in Academic Year 2017. This research was intended to know the teaching technique implemented by mentors in Mentoring Program of ELED at UMM in Academic Year 2017, to describe the problems faced by the mentors in implementing the teaching technique in Mentoring Program of ELED at UMM in Academic Year 2017, and to know the mentors’ solution in overcoming the problem in implementing the teaching technique in Mentoring Program of ELED at UMM in Academic Year 2017. This research was conducted by means of descriptive research design. The research instrument used in this research were interview guideline and document analysis to gather the data. In addition, the subjects of this research were concerns only on the college students who had becoming mentor in Mentoring Program of ELED at UMM in academic year 2017. The result has revealed that there are five teaching techniques implemented by mentors in teaching Mentoring Program namely: Information-gap task, Opinion-gap task, Reasoning-gap task, Question and Answer, and Structured Feedback. Furthermore, the finding also showed the problem which hindered the implementation of teaching techniques such as lack of mentor’s understanding on the teaching method, lack of time, classroom environment, and mentoring schedule. The last, to overcome the problem they encounter, the mentors proposed some solutions namely: the mentor had to prepare and also had to take an additional time to comprehend the teaching method that will be used in every meeting, the mentors tried to give the assignment toward the mentees that require repetitive practice in their dorm, reminding other mentors to maintain the silence and controlling the noise level from their class, using other technique which well matched with limited number of the mentees in classroom.
