Abstract

Hands are the agents that carrier pathogen and non-pathogen bacteria which are able to move either directly or indirectly. Bacteria spread directly through touching and handshaking then it will continue to mouth and will enter the intestinal tract. One of bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus. Bacteria prevention could be done by keeping cleanliness and hand hygiene; it becomes the most important thing to do. This research was aimed to analyze the difference between anti-bacterial activity of celery extract (Apium graveolens L) hand sanitizer subtance in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. This research was conducted by means of experimental research with The Posttest-Only Control Group Design. Experimental design used in this research was Complete Random Design (RAL). The extract concentrations used in this research were 75%, 50%, 25%, and 10%. The data analysis technique of the research was One-Way Anova analysis. The research result showed that there is effect of difference between anti-bacterial activity of celery extract hand sanitizer subtance in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment A1 (Concentration 75%) the diameter average of inhibition zone was 7,68 mm, treatment A2 (Concentration 50%) the diameter average of inhibition zone was 7,73 mm, treatment A3 (Concentration 25%) the diameter average of inhibition zone was 7,79 mm, treatment A4 (Concentration 10%) the diameter average of inhibition zone was 8,53 mm, treatment K1 (negative control) did not produce inhibition zone diameter, and in treatment K2 (positive control), the diameter average of inhibition zone was 8,78 mm. The best treatment was treatment A4 (Concentration 10%) which diameter average of inhibition zone was 8,53 and pH 5,77. This research result could be biology learning source material in form of leaflet.
