Abstract

Recently our government has implemented a new curriculum, School – Based curriculum (KTSP). This curriculum will be implemented nationally in 2007/2008. KTSP is the first curriculum that is developed by using decentralization approach. The main demand of decentralization approach is that the competence of every curriculum developer must be spread around from the central government to the local government, and the level of education unit (school). It is conducted to avoid imbalance and less understanding in the implementation of curriculum in local government and education unit. This research is conducted to know the English teacher’s understanding toward KTSP that socialized by Team Curriculum Developer and to know what the English teachers will do concerning the information of KTSP. In doing research, the writer used descriptive quantitative design. On August 27th 2007, 4 teachers at SMPN 3 Malang were asked to answer the questionnaire and interview concerning with their understanding toward KTSP and what they will do after knowing and understanding KTSP. The result of the study shows that the English teacher’s understanding toward the nature and the component of KTSP was entirely understood. It is proved that 100% of the teachers answered “yes” in each item of it and all of the teachers could explain all of items of questionnaire. The teachers made syllabus from Department of National Education. It was because the teachers implement teaching and learning activities based on KTSP from Competence Based Curriculum that they have already implemented toward the class so far. However, it is hoped that they cannot only understand theoretically but also actualize it in practically in teaching and learning activities. So, teacher should be more familiar with KTSP because in KTSP, the quality of curriculum is depended on the teachers and pupils in the class.
