Abstract

Apart from being gradually substituted, the development of curriculum in either global perspective or specifically our nation will be always related to the education goals. The effect of this substitution will influence learning aspects, especially assessment aspect. The process of assessment is one of crucial aspects which measures students' achievement in teaching-learning process. The purpose of this study was to reveal the perception of English teachers toward reading language testing implemented in the Curriculum 2013 and the problems faced by English teachers while implementing it. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this study was the teachers who taught English at seventh grade at SMP Negeri 1 Karangploso. The researcher conducted the interview as an instrument to collect the data. The data analysis of this study was formulated as follows: constructing the interview list, interviewing the English teachers, interpreting the data descriptively, and drawing conclusion based on data analysis. This study showed the following findings. The teachers' perception consists of various sub-concerns that will be described consecutively starting from (1) the general perception of reading language testing in Curriculum 2013; (2) the problems of implementing the language testing on reading skill incorporating the problems faced by the teachers and the solution towards the problems. This study concluded that teachers' perception is divided into two aspects, namely theoretical and empirical aspects. Theoretically, teachers' perception toward reading language testing implemented in Curriculum 2013 is categorized as positive perception. However, empirically, teachers' perception toward reading language testing implemented in Curriculum 2013 is categorized as negative perception. The problems faced by the teachers while implementing reading language testing in Curriculum 2013 are: technical problems (students' number, time allocation) and students' language proficiency problems (low level of vocabulary acquisition and understanding). In order to compromise both main problems above, the teachers implemented time management, interactive media used (hang man, flash card, and scrabble), and subjective language testing (free-call and summary test).
