Abstract

The implementation of teaching strategy in the school or college are different than the English course. This research investigates the teaching English strategies used in Kursus Bahasa Asing (KBA) University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There are three purposes of this research namely: to discuss the kinds of teaching English strategies used in KBA University of Muhammadiyah Malang, to find out how the implementation of teaching strategies in KBA University of Muhammadiyah Malang, and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of teaching strategies in KBA University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study is conducted by using qualitative research design. To determine the teaching strategies used in English, descriptive research is used. The subject of this study is a teacher who teaches English of Beginner Level in KBA University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study used two techniques, namely observation and semi-structured interview. The instruments of this research are field notes andinterview guides. The result of this study shows that, (1) the teacher at KBA University of Muhammadiyah Malang used direct instructional strategy and interactive strategy. However, the teacher also applied presentation and games. (2) The implementation of those strategy in such ways as: teacher tells what they will learn and what they are going to do, teacher gives the stimulus by asking to students according to the topic,eacher explain the material, teacher checks students' understanding and gives a feedback, teacher makes the situation fun and enjoy, teacher practice the expression, and teacher gives opportunity to students to give a respond while teacher asking. (3) There are advantages and disadvantages found in this study. The advantage is that it makes students practice and improve their speaking skills and the disadvantages are the limited time and sometimes the class become active and it was a little bit noisy.
