Abstract

The students from Indonesia who are going study overseas often have difficulty staying in another country because of culture barrier. In this case, culture barrier also occur to the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016. In current study, there are three purposes of this research namely; (1) to know the activities made by IRO to make the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016 has better understanding on culture barrier, (2) to discover the problems faced by the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016 on culture barrier understanding, (3) to investigate how the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016 solve the problems. This research used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects are the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016. Then, the technique used in this research was semi-structured interview and the instrument of this data is interview guide. The result of this study showed that; (1) IRO held an activities to learn basic Mandarin in ten days by given a module and audio. They have a discussion in the class with different topic for each day. The instructor is a native speaker from China, (2) the problems faced by the participants of Students Exchange Program in Tongren University of China in 2016 on cultural barriers understanding are language, sign and symbol (semantics), stereotypes and prejudices, behavior and belief, ethnocentrism, and religion, (3) they solved the cultural barriers problem on language by downloading Chinese dictionary, using some gestures, or asking to their supervisor or buddy. On sign and symbol (semantics), they solved it by asking their buddy about the certain gesture which was forbidden or permutation. On stereotypes and prejudices, they solved it by giving an explanation to be able to avoid misunderstanding. On behavior and belief, they solved it by bringing a spoon from Indonesia, and they always respected Chinese people's belief because there was opposite with them. On religion, they solved it by provided a room in their dorm for praying.
