Abstract

This research is conducted to know whether Role Play method can improve students' participation in learning English or not. To achieve this purpose, the researcher used classroom action research as the design. The instruments used to collect the data were observation and questionnaire. The observation was done in order to obtain the result of students' participation in learning English. The questionnaire was distributed in pre-cycle, cycle 1, cycle 2 and cycle 3 to know the students' participation result in learning English. Based on the result of observation and the result of questionnaire, it can be concluded that Role Play method can improve students' participation in learning English. The result of questionnaire pre-cycle was 39.90% and observation pre-cycle result was 43.05%. In cycle 1, the percentage of students participation score based on the researcher observation was 55.09% while questionnaire result was 61.38%. That result could not gain the criteria of high participationin which the criteria of high participation was ≥76%. Therefore, the cycle 2 was conducted to improve students' participation. In cycle 2, the percentage of students participation score based on researcher observation was 73.05% while questionnaire result was 65.36%. The students still have not reached the criteria of high participation which is ≥76%. In cycle 3, the result of students questionnaire was 77.21% and observation result was 76.01%. Therefore, from the significant improvement score from pre-cycle until cycle 3, it can be seen that teaching English by using Role Play method can improve students' participation in learning English. Therefore, based on the findings of this research, suggestions can be given to the teacher, the students and other researcher in order to be useful for improving students' participation in learning English.
