Abstract

There are many ways to use internet to support learning and teaching process. One of them is Learning Management System (LMS) which is defined as a software that administrates a training event. It provides the record data from learners, reports management, and course catalogue. In this case, the study is discussing about LMS used by the English Department lecturers in University of Muhammadiyah Malang and the student response toward the use of LMS. This research is trying to identify the LMS used by English Department lecturers in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study investigates the classes of 4th semester in a year 2016/2017 who are taught with LMS by their lecturer. The population of this study is all of the student in 4th semester which consist of 249 members which belong to 5 classes. In this research the researcher uses random sampling and took 20% from each classes. 10 student are chosen from each class and the total sample of this study is 50 students. This study is uses mixed approach to obtain the data because qualitative approach is suitable for the first problem yet quantitative approach is also required to measure the data in the second problem. The research instruments used are interview and questionnaire. Based on the research of the study it was found that LMS used by English Department lecturers is Edmodo and Schoology. The lecturer mostly used blended learning. LMS is needed to extend the class in order to make the student get better chance for sharing outside the class. Furthermore, the student response toward the LMS was mostly positive LMS ease the works submission because it can be accessed everywhere and every time. Most of the students feel comfortable with the use of LMS and their enthusiasm was neutral. The result show that the students think LMS cause a confusion at the first time they use it and the students tend to be neutral whether they prefer to discuss through face to face or using LMS.
