Abstract

Students' perception of English structure constitutes how they see structure based on their past knowledge of structure learning. It produces the conscious experience, recognition, and interpretation of English structure. It is important to learn structure to improve language skill, especially the productive skill which includes speaking and writing. Thus, in this study the researcher is interested in describing the students' perception of English structure in improving speaking and writing skill at English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study was using the descriptive quantitative research design. The subjects of this study were the whole third semester students of English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The researcher used questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. The population consisted of 128 students and the researcher took all of them as the samples as the sampling used was purposive sampling. Based on the research findings, the researcher concluded that: (1) 79.27% students gave positive response toward English structure in improving the speaking and writing skill, (2) the students' perception toward English structure in improving speaking include helping them to determine the arrangement of utterances in their speaking stated by70 students (54.68%), structure knowledge is important to speak effectively stated by, and structure helps them to convey meaning in their conversation stated by 66 students (51.56%), (3) the students' perception toward English structure in improving writing skill include structure leads them to the effective academic writing stated by 69 students (53.90%),the use of structure in writing helps them to write correctly stated by 69 students (53.90%), and structure leads them to better writing stated by 66 students (51.56%).
