Abstract

This research analyzed the problems faced by third year students and the solution providedby the students and teacher. The purposes of the research were to know what are the problems faced by students and the solution provided by the students and teacher. This research was classified as mixed research, qualitative and quantitative. The main subjects of this research were 60 students of XII science and social class at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang, also the English teacher of XII class. The data obtained were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were transformed into interview transcript. Meanwhile the quantitative data were gained from the questionnaire that has been filled by 60 students. The data were collected by distributed questionnaire to the students and explained the result of questionnaire. After that the researcher interviewed six students and teacher to complete the data from questionnaire. The results of the research showed that there are two problems faced by students in learning listening namely: linguistic and non linguistic problems. There are 3 linguistic problems that the writer found : pronunciation (63%), grammar (59%), and vocabulary (57%). Meanwhile there also 3 non linguistic problems: non linguistic problem related to students (57%), non linguistic problem related to teaching material (33%) and non linguistic problems related to the teacher (24%). The result also found the solution provided by the students to cope the problems in learning listening, like: alternative source and exercise did by teacher (67%), doing note taking (51%), and asking teacher and friends (67%). The data from interview also support the data that have been collected by questionnaire.
