Abstract

In this study, the writer was interested in describing the problems faced by the second grade English teachers and t the way teachers cope with the problems in teaching reading at SMAN 1 Panggul-Trenggalek. Descriptive research was used as the design of this study. The research subject involved two English teachers of second grade students at SMAN 1 Panggul-Trenggalek in teaching reading. The data were obtained through the observation and interviews. The result of this study showed that the teachers faced some problems. The first problem in selecting reading material related to the topic in the text which was different from the students’ condition and the vocabulary and structure of the text were difficult. To cope with this problem, the teacher found the material with a simple vocabulary and structure, created and modified materials based on the students condition, but it must be related to the language focus that would be discussed. Besides, she arranged the materials from the easy to the difficult material. The second problem was classroom management since the class was big and each class had 43 students. In solving the problem, the teachers provided reading texts to all students in teaching-learning activities, so teaching-learning situation would be more effective. When the teacher asked one of the students to read the text loudly, the others had to pay attention. If there were students who did not give attention or made noise, the teachers asked them to continue to read the text. The last problem in developing students’ motivation and interest was students’ perception that learning English was difficult especially since there were differences between written form and pronunciation. To cope with that problem, the teachers persuaded the students that learning English was not difficult, they made the teaching-learning process as interesting as possible, and they also gave quizzes to give them score.
