Abstract
Background: Shigella dysenteriae is a causative organism of dysentry with high morbidity and mortality rate especially in developing countries. Recently, the resistance of shigella dysenterieae to antibiotic is widespread, causing immediate demand of alternative medication; one of which is through the employment Morinda citrifolia fruit. Morinda citrifolia fruit is considered having antimicrobial effect due to some active substances, which work by damaging the cytoplasmic membrane and causing the protein synthetic inhibition in ribosome. Objective: This study was intended to prove the antimicrobial effects of Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts to S.dysenteriae. Methods: This study employed the True Experiments Post Test Only Control Group Design. The method used was tube dilutions containing different concentration of noni fruit extract; 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, 0.78% and two controls (material and germ controls). Data obtained were analyzed by using oneway ANOVA. Results: The results showed that the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was determined in 25% concentration. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was cannot determined dueto the turbid brown extract colour. The oneway ANOVA test showed that there was a significant difference among treatments (sig. rate = 0.000 < P = 0.01). Conclusion: This study revealed that Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts in vitro had an antimicrobial effect to Shigella dysentriae.
