Abstract

Literature is the expression of lives in words of truth and beauty; it is the written record of man’s spirit, thought and aspiration. One of the literary works is novel. By reading novel, people can get so many values and messages about the human life that is complex with many conflicts to be faced. That is the reason why the researcher analyzes novel. This study was conducted to analyze the sadness of Harry Potter as the main character of the novel “Harry Potter and the Half – Blood Prince”. The investigation focused on the causes of Harry Potter’s sadness and the effects of Harry Potter’s sadness on himself. This study used a descriptive method because it only described about sadness of the main character in J.K Rowling’s novel “Harry Potter and the Half – Blood Prince”. In this study, the researcher used objective approach because the researcher did not need to study the author’s life, background of the work or background of the society, but only analyzed the work itself. The result of this study showed that Harry Potter has four causes of sadness, they were (1) Loss and separation, it happened when Harry’s Godfather died, Harry’s headmaster died and Fawkes leaved Harry. (2) Changes, it happened when Harry decided to leave Hogwarts School and Harry committed the journey alone. (3) Disappointment. Harry was disappointed when Snape killed his Headmaster and (4) Relationship. Harry felt sad when he decided to break his girlfriend up. The effects of Harry Potter’s sadness on himself were (1) Emotional effect that made Harry became angry with Uncle Vernon (2) Social effect that affects his relationship with his best friend tighter (3) Depression. In this case, the death of Dumbledore made Harry depressed.
