Abstract

English has important roles in our life because English is an international language. To communicate with other people in the world, people must use English language because not every one is able to communicate in different languages. Because of this importance the teacher has an essential role in developing and applying ways in teaching process. It can be done by implementing the conversation in teaching speaking This study was conducted to investigate the students’ perception toward the indicators of teaching speaking based on 2004 English Curriculum. The subjects of this study were students of MAN 1 Malang. The research design in this study was descriptive research. The instrument used to collect the data was a rating scale (check list). The rating scale was given to the students and it was written in Indonesian language to avoid the students’ misconception and misunderstanding. The rating scale consisted 23 items with five indicators. They were excellent (5), good (4), fair (3), bad (2), and very bad (1). The rating scale was used to obtain information about the students’ perception toward the indicators of teaching speaking at MAN I Malang. To analyze the data of this study from the students’ rating scale, the researcher used descriptive statistics. The populations of this research were students MAN 1 Malang class 2. The sample was one class with 66 students. In this case, the technique used was cluster random sampling It is concluded that the students’ perception toward the indicators of teaching speaking based on the 2004 English Curriculum was good, so the teacher need to motivate their students to learn speaking skill more successfully.
