Abstract

Nowadays, translation is needed as the best way to comprehend and connect people’s communication or information. In delivering the information, media is required, such as visual, audio and audio-visual media. Novel is the most popular visual media which is interesting to be read for teenagers and adolescents. In this study, A Walk to Remember novel was taken as an object. Therefore, there are three research objectives of this study namely: to find out romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel, to describe the classifications of romantic idiomatic expressions, and to analyse the strategies used in translating romantic idiomatic expressions. This research used descriptive qualitative research design to draw data of the topic discussed that is idiomatic expressions. In collecting the data, researcher used some steps namely reading the novel, writing the idioms, selecting the romantic idioms, and fixing the romantic idioms by rechecking both English and Indonesian novel. Then, in analysing the data, researcher made some tables to explain the findings detailed. The findings showed romantic idiomatic expressions that were used by Landon Carter in the novel namely “had a crush on her”, “madly in love”, “with all my heart”, “deep down”, “fall in love”, “from the bottom of my heart”, “hit it off”, “marvel to behold”, “part of me”, and “my pop question”. The classifications are classified into encoding, grammatical, substantive and without pragmatic idioms. Then, there are two strategies used in translating romantic idioms namely similar meaning similar form and similar meaning dissimilar form. Then, the most strategy applied is similar meaning similar form.To sum up, although idiom known as phrase that cannot be translated literally, it is not applicable on all idioms.
