Abstract

There are various strategies and techniques of teaching used by the teacher to improve students writing achievement of the 8th grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. In this present study, the researcher tried to present picture series as a considerable media in teaching writing and as a way to get students attention to study. Picture series is such a comic strip, provide the subject matter for writing narrative and for speculating about the story beyond the picture in the strip. In conducting this study, the researcher used quasi experimental research design. Following the idea, this study was designed to investigate the effect of using picture series in teaching writing narrative text. The 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang were used as the target population of this study. In this research, the classroom was devided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group was given a treatment by using picture series. In collecting the data, the researcher used test as instrument of the research. Due to the need to understand the effect, t-test was employed in this present study. The data of this research were analysis by using SPSS/PC+. In the pretest, the mean score of experimental group was 9.88 while control group was 9.82 . Moreover, in the posttest, the mean of experimental group was 12.82 while the control group was 9.47. The result of the statistical analysis showed that the t-value was 6.544 higher than the t-table 1.746. Therefore, the H0 (Null hypothesis) was rejected and H1 (Alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that the used of picture series provided better achievement for the students and it is recommended for English teacher, especially for junior high school teachers to attract the studentsÂ’ interest.
