Abstract

Speaking is skill to communicate in learning of the productive language skills by using our own words orally to transferring our ideas in using the target language effectively. The competence of a language is judged from speaking skill rather than other language skills, it is because communicative skills are more often used and needed in the real life to communicate and socialize with people all over the world. For some reasons, there are factors that influence and determine the students to have different skills in speaking English; they are the supporting factor and the inhibiting factor. It is important for teachers to diagnose why some students can learn speaking ability easier than others and vice versa. Therefore, this research focuses on analyzing the factors that influence the studentsÂ’ speaking skill. This research used the descriptive research design since it was able to give deep description regarding the answer of the research problems. The research subjects of this research are the students of class 8a in MTsN Pajarakan Probolinggo. In collecting the data, this study used document, observation, and questionnaire as research instruments. The result of this research showed that the students had fair speaking skill with the mean score amount to 78,9. It was also found that the factors that can improve the speaking skill of student are learners talk a lot, participant is even, motivation is high, and language is an acceptable. Lastly, as the inhibiting factors, it can be concluded that inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother tongue were proved as the factors that hampering students in speaking English.
