Abstract

The researcher defines this topic because nowadays people interact with others via social media (Instagram and Facebook) by using many kinds of languages. In Instagram captions and Facebook status updates, we often find some users use code switching to show their idea and feeling. This research is conducted on the use of code-switching in Instagram and Facebook by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There are two research problems in this research, they are: (1) What types of code-switching used in Instagram and Facebook by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang? (2) What are the reasons of using code-switching in Instagram and Facebook by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang? The purpose of the study are : (1)To identify type of code-switching using in Instagram and Facebook by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang.(2)To identify the reason of using code-switch in Instagram and Facebook by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Further, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative as the design of this research. The instrument used to obtain and analyze the data in this research is the researcher herself. In addition, the researcher did collecting the statusÂ’ Facebook and Photo caption in Instagram written by Thai students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang that use code switching. Moreover, the researcher also conduct interview session to know the types of code switching, the reasons of using code switching in Instagram and Facebook. From the result of data analysis, there are three types of code switching used in social media by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The dominant type of code switching is Intra sentential code switching, followed by Inter sentential code switching, and Extra-sentential code switching. The researcher finds there are seven reasons of using code switching in social media by Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The main reason of code switching in social media (Instagram and Facebook) is because of real lexical need, and Intention of clarifying the speech content to interlocutor. In addition, not all of Thai students in University of Muhammadiyah Malang can speak English fluently. By switching language, they will get more benefit such as to improve their vocabulary in English.
