Abstract

This research was concerned on the effectiveness of English pop songs on students' vocabulary mastery at second grade of SMP PGRI 2 Batu. In addition, this research was aimed at improving the vocabulary mastery through the use of English pop songs at second grade students of SMP PGRI 2 Batu. This research used quasi-experimental design. It was because the total of the class and the students were limited and the participants were organized well in the class where randomization was not possible. In addition, there were two kinds of test used in this research to be the instrument. The first was pre-test and the second was post-test. Then, the data were analyzed by using manual calculation and SPSS (Statistic Product and Statistic Solution version 20.0). Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that the result of t_o was higher than t-table (5.244 > 2.024). In addition, by using English pop songs, the students were shown to be more active and enthusiastic in learning English; their attitude toward vocabulary and teaching learning also increased. They also worked together with their friends well and were braver to answer the questions during the lessons. This also gave the evidence that for this research the use of English pop songs was effective to improve students' vocabulary mastery at the second grade students of SMP PGRI 2 Batu. Accordingly, it indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.
