Abstract

Method is one of the important ways in teaching English. Method is needed for the teacher to make the students easier to catch up the lesson in a class and to facilitate them in accepting the lesson. Therefore the writer wants to investigate: (1) the methods are used by teacher in teaching speaking (2) the studentsÂ’ responses toward the method of teaching speaking. This study used mixed method that combined qualitative research and quantitative research as the appropriate way to describe and give information about the methods used by teacher in teaching speaking and the studentsÂ’ responses toward the method of teaching speaking. The subjects of this study were English teacher and students of eleventh grade of MA Billingual Batu. The instruments used by the writer were observation, interview and likert scale. The result of this study showed that the methods used by teacher in teaching speaking were direct method and communicative language teaching (CLT). Then, the result of studentsÂ’ responses showed that out of 23 students under investigation, the mean score calculation of direct method showed 38.17 which indicated that the students got positive response toward the method and the mean score calculation of communicative language teaching (CLT) showed 39.73 which indicated that the students also got positive response toward the method.
