Abstract

Speaking English is one of the important skills that should be mastered by the students of International Relations, because having good speaking skill can support their carrier in the future. However, many students still face the difficulties in speaking English. Therefore, this research was intended to know studentsÂ’ difficulties in learning speaking and also their strategies to overcome it. The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative research which described the current condition of the students about difficulties in learning speaking. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. Moreover, the population of in this study was the first semester students of International Relations who took speaking subject in ESP program at University of Muhammadiyah Malang, consisting of eight classes. The total number the population was 177 students and the writer only took 25% of 177 students as a sample. The researcher choose the sample randomly. The findings of this research showed that the International RelationsÂ’ students faced some difficulties in learning speaking related to inhibition, nothing to say, low/uneven participation, mother tongue used, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and having no partners in practicing English. Meanwhile, the studentsÂ’ strategies to overcome those difficulties are: trying to be confident and being active in the class, being well preparation, understand the topic before joining the class, studying grammar deeply from book or asking teacher or friends, write and memorize new vocabularies that appear from English books, listening the correct pronunciation from the first sources.
