Abstract

Comic strips is a familiar reading source that can be a new reliable media to be presented in writing class. Comic strips includes cartoons or pictures that are accompanied by the dialogues and narrator boxes in delivering the story. The interesting features found in comic strips capable to make the students understand the story easier then stimulate them to gain some ideas for their writing. Hence, comic strips can also create various classroom activities especially in learning to write narrative text since its sequences pictures that tell a story. However, narrative is one of the text that the high school students must be able to achieve. Hence, this research was focused in experimenting comic strips for teaching writing narrative text to know whether or not there is an improvement in studentsÂ’ writing scores. In this research, the researcher used quantitative research design that focused on experimental research which specifically adapted quasi-experiment. The population were tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Malang and the sample was taken from 2 classes, they were 16 MIA 07 as the experimental class and 16 MIA 9 as the control class. Each class consisted of 30 students. The main instrument used by the researcher to collect the data was a test that included pre-test, and post-test. The researcher used SPSS version 20 to calculate the significant difference of the studentsÂ’ mean score from experimental and control class then, test the hypothesis. The finding of this study presented that comic strips capable to improve the studentsÂ’ writing scores. Based on the studentsÂ’ mean score of pre-test, it showed that experimental class resulted 71,93 that was lower than control class 73,42. It showed that the mean score of pre-test from both groups were under the standard of achievements (78). After the treatment which used comic strips was applied to the experimental class, the mean scores of its post-test was significantly different. The experimental class reached 80,23 and the control class was 74,50. It referred that the mean scores of post-test from experimental class was above the standard of achievement (78) but the control class scores was under the standard of achievements (78). Besides, the hypothesis testing showed that the level of sig. (2-tailed) is ,001, which shows that the significant is below ,005, it referred that the alternative hypothesis on this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. So, it concludes that comic strips capable to become one of the considerably media to be used in teaching the students in writing narrative text and afford to improve the studentsÂ’ writing narrative score.
