Abstract

This research is aimed to find out whether the use of pictorial story effectively improves students writing achievement of the eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 08 Batu. The researcher tried to present pictorial story as the media in teaching writing. Pictorial story is a medium that comprises of different pictures and combines with text as a clue sentence. This research used a quasi-experimental design to know whether or not teaching by using pictorial story improves students writing achievement. The sampling technique that researcher used is purposive sampling. In the experimental research, the classroom was divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group was given a treatment by using pictorial story while control group did not receive the treatment using pictorial story. In collecting the data, the researcher used test as instruments of the research, focusing in achievement test. The test are divided into two; pretest and posttest. The data of this research were analyzed by using SPSS/PC+. In the pretest, the mean score of experimental group was 11.25 while control group was 10.61. Moreover, in the posttest, the mean of experimental group was 12.63 while control group was 10.91. Moreover, the result of the statistical analysis showed that the t-ratio value of 4.586 was greater than the t-table of 2.069. Therefore, the (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. This meant that the use of pictorial story provided better writing achievement for the students and it is recommended for the English teacher, especially for junior high school teachers to attract the studentsÂ’ interest.
