Abstract

Nowadays, English is much needed in educational side as an international language to face the modern technology and globalization era. In learning English, speaking sometimes becomes something difficult for several people. It could be found when the pre-interview was conducted towards the English teacher at State Vocational High School 1 Batu. It was revealed that the students had problems in English speaking. Those problems were the student was shy and afraid of speaking English, they had less motivation and they got low score in speaking. Moreover, being a teacher in the digital era should have some inovation in teaching learning process. One of the inovation is teaching using game. It allows the student to work cooperatively, arouse studentsÂ’ motivation and attention, compete with each other, think in different way, and relax a stressed situation. There are various games that can be applied in teaching learning process. In this study, mingle game is implemented to solve the problems found at State Vocational High School 1 Batu. Thus, the research was necessary conducted to improve the studentsÂ’ motivation and studentsÂ’ speaking skill through mingle game. The research design was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. The data collection was completed using interview, observation, and test. The result of the study showed through the interview and observation result and the average of X/BB2 studentsÂ’ speaking score at State Vocational High School 1 Batu by implementing mingle game. It was revealed that the studentsÂ’ motivation increased from pre-test, cycle 1 to cycle 2. The result showed that the students were shy and afraid of speaking English in the previous time, then after implementing mingle game, they became confident and brave. Futhermore, according to the test result, it was revealed that the studentsÂ’ mean score was 46.25 in pre-test; 62.32 in cycle 1; and 73.65 in cycle 2. Indeed, the implementation of mingle game is an appropriate to improve studentsÂ’ speaking skill. Based on the result, it is suggested to implement mingle game in the teaching learning process to help the students improve their speaking skill.
