Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical climate country which has a great potential in producing a high quality and high profitable price of fruits. Recently, it has been found and being cultivated a type of fruit which has a bright prospect called as Pepino fruit, or common people call it as melodi fruit. It is considered as a new kind since just introduced in 2003. Pepino fruit has a big potential to be cultivated as productive plant and has a great prospective for fruit farmers in Indonesia; besides, the cultivation is easy and the range between planting and harvest time takes quite short time, also this fruit has a lot of advantages for the health. For those advantages, Pepino fruit will be efficient to be cultivated in an effective way for the maximum harvest gained by the fruit farmer. Effectively, we can conduct things as follow: choosing good seed and implementing proper cultivation process to avoid wasting time and high production cost so that they can reach the targeted efficiency level dan gather an optimum outcomes. The problem which becomes the main subject on this research can be formulated as follow: 1) How much is the cost, revenue, income, from farming and cultivation of Pepino fruit?, 2) Has the Pepino fruit farming and cultivation been efficient? . This research aims are: 1) To know how much the cost, revenue, and income of the farming and cultivation of Pepino fruit is, 2) To know how efficient the farming and cultivation of Pepino fruit. This research was conducted at Desa Sumber Brantas, Kecamatan Bumiaji, Kota Batu. The selection of this area is done purposively based on a consideration that this area is one of the production center of Pepino fruit located in Kecamatan Bumiaji, and as one of the production center on East Java region, while commonly those production centres of pepino fruit in Indonesia are not quite huge. The respondent selection method on this research uses cencus method which is a survey to collect the information from the whole population members. We use cencus method because this commodity is quite few to be cultivated. The sampling method is refered from M. Suparmoko (1999). There two kinds of data, primary data which are gathered directly from the respondent by interviewing the farmers, and secondary data which are gained from publicity or literature, related institution which can support this research to support the primary data such as village monography or others. The analysis method used in this research is cost analysis which is the sum of fixed cost and variable costs, and revenue analysis which is the difference between the gained revenue and the cost expense on production process. Included in variable costs are fertilizer, pesticide and labor; while the field rent cost is a fixed cost. Based on the calculation result, it shows that the farming and cultivation of pepino fruit cost using monoculture system in Desa Sumberbrantas is Rp. 5.169.482/ hectare, while implementing intercropping system is Rp. 5.380.000/hectare. The revenue on farming and cultivation of pepino fruit applying monoculture system is Rp 7.062.222/hectare, while implanting intercropping system is Rp.7.000.000/hectare. The income on farming and cultivation of pepino fruit using monoculture system is Rp. 1.892.741/hectare, and using intercropping system is Rp 1.620.000/hectare. The efficiency value (R/C Ratio) from farming and cultivation of pepino fruit using monoculture sytem is 1.61; while if using intercropping system, the R/C value is 1,30. This result shows that pepino fruit farming and cultivation implemented using monoculture and intercropping systems give advantage and efficiency to be developed for bigger farming and cultivation.
