Abstract

Learning is private activity because we cannot see how other people think as they learn. We have realized that the differences between one student and other already existed. Learning styles are not abilities; rather, their preferences to use their abilities (Santrock, 2001)). Students have different interest, abilities, and preferences. The teacher should identify their students’ learning style so they can use an appropriate teaching technique which is suitable with students’ learning style. Therefore, why the writer was interested in studying the students’ learning style to know the kinds of learning style and to find the style mostly used by the students in learning speaking. The research design used in this study was descriptive quantitative research. The population of this study were third grade students of SMPN 2 Tumpang and 40 students were selected as the sample. The instruments used to collect the data were learning style questioner and observation. All data were collected in September, 2006. Based on the finding of the research, there were six kinds of learning style: auditory learning style, visual learning style, kinesthetic, Individual, group and tactile learning style. The style mostly used by the students in learning speaking was visual learning style.
