Abstract

Code Mixing refers to the use of two languages together, changing from one language to the other in a single utterance. Code mixing does not only happen in oral communication but also in a written form such as novel. The use of code mixing in a novel is an interesting phenomenon to analyze because not all the writer mixes the language of the novel. Most of novel published in a country with its language. Therefore, the researcher is interested in analyzing Indonesian-English code mixing in Cigarette Girl novel. The objective of this study are: (1) to know the Indonesian-English code mixing found in the Cigarette Girl novel written by Ratih Kumala, (2) to find out the types of Indonesian-English code mixing found in the Cigarette Girl novel written by Ratih Kumala. This study used qualitative research design because this study focused on studying social phenomena in bilingualism society. The object of this study was the Cigarette Girl novel written by Ratih Kumala. The data were collected by reading and analyzing Cigarette Girl novel. Data analysis of this study were analyzing Indonesian-English code mixing and classifying the types of it. The result of this study showed that there were numerous Indonesian-English code mixing sentences found in Cigarette Girl novel. Indonesian-English code mixing in Cigarette Girl novel occurred in the beginning, middle, and at the end of the sentences. There were two types of Indonesian-English code mixing in Cigarette Girl novel, they were insertion and alternation. In insertion, the novelist of Cigarette Girl novel inserted Indonesian word in the form of noun and honorific into English sentences as the base language. While in alternation, the novelist transferred the grammatical system both Indonesian and English in the sentence.
