Abstract

Keyword : teaching reading, strategies, English teacher Teaching reading strategy is one of the crucial parts in which the teacher requires in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching reading. Strategy helps teacher to deliver materials and assist the students to comprehend the material. This study is aimed at knowing teaching strategies used by the English teacher in teaching reading and knowing the English teacherÂ’s reason of using those teaching strategies in teaching reading at SMPN 5 Malang. This study employed descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study was an English teacher at eight grades at SMPN 5 Malang. In order to know the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching reading, the writer conducted classroom observation to get the data. The writer used observation field notes as the instrument. Besides, the researcher did the interview to get the data about the English teacherÂ’s reason of using those strategies. The writer used interview guide as the instrument. The interview conducted after the second observation. Based on the observation and interview, the teaching strategies used by the English teacher in teaching reading were: asking question, summarizing, and clarifying. Obviously in the finding discussion with the English teacher, the researcher finds the similar activity with the different theories. Moreover in applying those kinds of strategies, there were five reasons: Using asking question strategy,(1) to know studentsÂ’ understanding and (2) help students to think actively. Second is summarizing, (3) it helps students to eliminate unnecessary information and (4) can help students remember what they read. Third is clarifying, (5) to modify studentsÂ’ misunderstanding and misconception.
