Abstract

Reading is very important skill in learning language beside listening, speaking, and writing. Reading is also very important at the early stage of learning in Junior High School. Students should be trained on how to read well in their reading. In teaching reading, the teacher has to use some strategies. By applying some of strategies in teaching reading, it is hoped that the students will be interest in learning reading. The problems to be investigated are: (1) What are the teaching strategies used to teach reading comprehension by the teacher of SMP Negeri 5 Kertosono ? (2) What are the studentsÂ’ responses toward their teacherÂ’s strategies in teaching reading comprehension ? The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The subject was English teacher at SMP N 5 Kertosono. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guide, observation and questionnaire. The data collection was stated by developing research instruments such as interview guide, observation checklist and observation notes also questionnaire checklist. Then conducting the research activities such as interview the teacher and observing the class. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showed that the english teacher used there five strategies of teaching reading used by the teacher at C class in SMP N 5 Kertosono. The strategies included: (1) Determining Importance strategies, (2) Pair-share strategies, (3) Summarizing strategies, (4) Questioning and Answering strategies, (5) Imaging strategies. Teaching strategies used by the teacher got positive and negative response from the students. Determining importance strategies, pair-share strategies, questioning and answering strategies, and imaging strategies got positive response from the students. It means that the students liked or perceived positively those strategies. Therefore, the teacher should maintain applying those strategies in order to make the students more active and have high motivation in learning reading comprehension. If the students were active, automaticaly the teaching learning process runs well. In summarizing strategies, the students had negative response. It means that the students did not pay attention, rejected or perceived negatively with those strategy. So the teacher should combine the strategies creatively in order to help the students more pay attention and could avoid monotonous situation, also students'boredom.
