Abstract

Vocabulary is a component of language that can facilitate and support English learners in mastering four language skills. The purposes of this study are, firstly, to understand the techniques used by teacher in teaching vocabulary. Secondly, it is also aimed to understand the teacher's reasons of implementing technique of teaching vocabulary, and last, to identify the students' response towards the techniques implemented by teacher in X MIA 5 (Matematika Ilmu Alam) class at SMAN 1 Purwoharjo. The writer focuses this present study on teaching techniques of vocabulary mastery because learning vocabulary is not easy. Moreover, English is one of officially foreign languages used nationally for Indonesian. So, in teaching English vocabulary, teachers should have a good reflection and understanding in teaching technique. This study employed a descriptive research design because this present study explore vocabulary teaching technique used by the teacher in X MIA 5 (Matematika Ilmu Alam) class at SMAN 1 Purwoharjo. The research subjects of this study were the English teacher and the students of X MIA 5 (Matematika Ilmu Alam) at SMAN 1 Purwoharjo that consist of 39 students, 2014/2015 academic year. To collect the valid data, this study used observation field notes, interview list, and questionnaire list as the research instruments. The result of this study showed that eight techniques observed and used by the teacher such as visual, synonym and definition, contrasts and opposites, translation, asking others, using dictionary, contextual guesswork, and puzzle. Those techniques are implemented by the teacher because she wants to make more variation of the teaching learning process especially for teaching vocabulary. Finally, the students showed positive response toward those techniques observed because they very interested and enthusiastic when the teacher implemented those techniques.
