Abstract

Keyword : speaking , Numbered Heads Together , technique This research was carried out based on the problem faced by the researcher when she did observation in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The result of the preliminary study at the X IPA Grade showed that the studentsÂ’ achievement in speaking was still unsatisfactory. Besides they had low involvement to participate in the speaking activities. To solve the problem, the technique called Numbered Heads Together technique was chosen. The problem of this research is “How does Numbered Heads Together technique improve speaking English ability of tenth grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang.” The research used a collaborative action research design which was intended to improve both speaking ability and involvement in speaking activities. The subjects of this research were 34 students (X IPA Grade) of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data of this research study were obtained through observation checklist during teaching learning process and speaking test at the end of the cycles. The findings of this research indicated that the Numbered Heads Together technique was successful in improving both the studentsÂ’ speaking ability and the studentsÂ’ involvement in speaking activities. The improvement could be seen from increase of studentsÂ’ mean score and the studentsÂ’ individual score percentage from pre-cycle to Cycle II. The studentsÂ’ mean score had improve greatly from the studentsÂ’ mean score of preliminary test which was 62,5 to the studentsÂ’ mean score in Cycle II which was 88,3, in which 100 % of studentsÂ’ individual score achieved the score of ≥ 70 based on Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) English subjects in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang especially for X Grade. Based on those findings, it can be concluded that the application of Numbered Heads Together technique is effective in teaching speaking comprehension. This suggests that the English teacher could implement Numbered Heads Together technique in teaching speaking in order to motivate students in learning English speaking.
