Abstract

Keyword : Error, Pronunciation, Segmental Phonemes. Pronunciation is the way in which a language or a particular word or sound is spoken. Pronunciation becomes one of important things when we learn English in order to make good communication between speaker and listener in order to avoid misunderstanding. The aim of this research is to know the segmental phonemes errors made by the students at first-semester of English Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang in learning English pronunciation. The research design used in this research is descriptive quantitative research design. The pronunciation test and audio recorder were the research instruments. There are 24 students in Class C in the first-semester students of English Department in academic year 2015/2016 who took pronunciation class as the research subject. Based on the result of this research there are 59 or 47% errors of pronunciation in vowel sound which was made by 20 students, 25 or 20% errors of pronunciation in consonants sound which was made by 14 students, and also 42 or 33% errors of pronunciation in diphthongs which were made by 19 students. Also, the most dominant errors made by the students were errors in pronouncing vowel sounds. Some suggestions that the researcher wants to give to the teachers and students are the teachers should pay attention to the pronunciation while teaching English and that students should active in all classes, and also the students keep practicing it outside the classroom by themselves by using other media to improve their pronunciation. Hopefully, the next researcher could deeply analyzed in causes of errors and the ways how to solve the errors in pronunciation.
