Abstract

This study focuses on the correlation between students' habit in watching English movies and their speaking ability at SMAN 9 Malang. The purposes of this study are to know whether or not there is any correlation between students' habit in watching English movies and their speaking ability at SMAN 9 Malang. In this study, the quantitative non-experimental research design was used because the researcher want to investigate the correlation between students' habit in watching English movie and their speaking ability. The population of this study was the second grade students at SMAN 9 Malang, academic year 2016/2017 and the sample was the students of XI IPS 1 . The data were taken by two isntruments, namely a questionnaire test and a speaking test. The research findings showed that out of 28 participants, thirteen participants (46.4%) got the score range of 40-60, which means their frequency in watching English movies was high. Next, fifteen participants (53.5%) got the score range of 20-39, which means that their frequency in watching English movies was medium. In addition, in terms of speaking ability, out of 28 participants, eleven participants (39.7%) got the score range of 75-100 and categorized as high in speaking ability. Then, seventeen students (60.7%) got the score range of 50-74 which was categorized as medium. The result of the correlation by using SPSS 2.0 showed that the value of correlation between students' habit in watching English movie and their speaking ability was 0.968. In brief, significance probability value (0.05> Significance) which means Ha was accepted. As a result, the students' habit in watching English movies and their speaking ability showed a very strong correlation.
