Abstract

Teaching speaking is a process of giving lessons to students, in which the objective is making and helping students speak English. In this case, speaking is speech or utterances with the purpose of having intention to be recognized by speaker and the receiver processes the statements in order to recognize their intentions. Moreover, speaking is the most difficult aspect for students to master since there are a lot of components involved. In this case, this study focuses on implementation of "Magic Mantra" to teach speaking in Indocita Foundation Singosari. Thus, the purposes of this study are: (1) to investigate the teacher's way to implement the "magic mantra" in teaching speaking, (2) to find out the student's responses toward "magic mantra" in teaching speaking. This study employed qualitative research design to describe the phenomenon in speaking class. The aim of this study was to analyze and describe the phenomenon which happened in speaking class. Qualitative research design selected as instrument because based on the purposes of study that observed phenomenon in speaking class naturally. The data of this study was collected from the class observation and interview the English teacher and students itself. Based on classroom observation and interview, the results in this study showed that the English speaking teacher of Indocita Foundation (IF) Singosari used various techniques in implementing "magic mantra" in teaching speaking. The writer identified that there were several techniques of implementing "magic mantra" which were applied by the teacher while teaching speaking at Indocita Foundation (IF) Singosari. They were: (1) drilling, (2) question and answer, (3) discussion. Those techniques were used in order to make the students speak up. Based on the observation, the students' responses toward "Magic Mantra" were: excited, motivated, and enjoyed in learning process on speaking class.
