Abstract

Motivation is important in this life. Doing something without any motivation will almost certainly fail. This study was focused on students' motivation in learning speaking at ECE of MTs Darussalam, Blitar. Meanwhile, the purpose of the study were: 1) to know the students' motivation in learning speaking, 2) To describe the factors which influence the students' motivation in learning speaking, 3) To describe the teacher's way to motivate students in learning speaking. In this study, the descriptive design was used to obtain the data concerning the research problems. This study focused on the students who were joining ECE and the teacher of ECE as the subjects of this study. Three instruments were used to collect the data: 1) observation checklist, 2) questionnaire, and 3) interview guide. The research finding showed that out of 35 students of ECE class, five students (14.3%) had very high motivation in learning speaking English. Meanwhile, 23 students (65.7%) were included in high motivation in learning speaking English. Then, four students (11.42%) had average motivation. The last, students got the mean score of 86.03. The factors which influenced students' motivation were intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors. The intrinsic factors were: self-efficacy, interest, goals, expectancies, and values; while the extrinsic factors ware: family, friends, prize or rewards, and Scores. The ways used by the teacher to motivate the students were: 1) Games, 2) making dialogues or conversations, 3) increasing self-regulated learning, 4) increasing the students' interest toward the topic, and 5) making a good atmosphere in the class.
