Abstract

Keyword : Translation Shift, Category Shift, Holy Quran The aims of this study are to find out the category shifts found in English and Indonesian translation versions of Holy Quran surah Al-Araf and also the most dominant category shift employed in both translation versions. The writer chooses English and Indonesian translation versions of Holy Quran Surah Al-Araf which taken from a Quranic Digital Version 3 which is originally developed by Sugema (2004) as the object of the study considering this surah is the second longest surah in Holy Quran, so that there will be many possibilities that the writer will find many category shifts here. Moreover, this surah is also chosen because the content in this surah can be an admonition for us for not doing bad deeds as the people in the previous era did, so that they get the punishment by God as the result. This study employed qualitative research design due to it attempts to broaden and/or deepen our understanding about category shift. In order to gather the data, the instrument used in this study is document analysis. This instrument is selected because in this study the writer analyzes the translation versions of Holy Quran surah Al-Araf as mentioned before. The results in this study the show that there are thirty nine category shifts which consist of twenty five unit shift, nine structure shift, seven class shift, and also two intra-system shift. Consequently, in accordance with the previous explanation the dominantly category shift is unit shift in which it indicates that there are twenty five rank changes in both English and Indonesian translation versions.
