Abstract

Literature is a medium through which people can convey their ideas about social issues. One of literary works that can impress the readers and give some knowledge about values in society is novel. Sylvia Nasar's novel A Beautiful Mind was chosen by the writer as the topic of this thesis. This study aimed to find out the indicators and actions of schizophrenia faced by John Nash on Sylvia Nasar's Novel A Beautiful Mind. The descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study. Objective approach was used because it does not need to study the authors' life. The writer only focuses on analyzing the indicators and actions of Schizophrenia faced by John Nash as a schizophrenic man. The object of this study was the novel entitled A Beautiful Mind written by Sylvia Nasar. Reviewing of documents in collecting the data from many materials such as books, articles, internets, which are closely related to the topic was used to collect the data. Based on the result of the data analysis, it revealed that, the indicators of schizophrenia faced by John Nash were; (1) his delusion about being recruited by aliens and the left foot of God; (2) his hallucination about the man in red neckties around the MIT campus; and (3) his disorganized bad behavior. Then, the actions of Schizophrenia that John Nash acted as the different characters; (1) his action as being recruited by "Aliens" and the left foot of God as follows: (a) shifting station to station on radio, (b) organizing a defense against "an invasion of aliens", (c) asking about the secret number; (2) his action about the man in red neckties around the MIT campus as follow: (a) speaking loudly and acting like a spoiled little boy; and (3) his action about his bad behavior as follow: (a) transforming his appearance and manner.
