Abstract

Keyword : media, teaching media, PowToon, writing. English teaching involves four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing is as a part of the difficult language skills beside listening, speaking, and reading, and must be taught maximally by the teacher to the students. The reasons are because writing is a mixture of idea, vocabulary, and also grammar. Many students in SMA Negeri 1 still have difficulties in writing, especially in identifying the kinds of text. Those reasons are when they write something, they must pay attention to many things, including ideas, concepts, vocabulary and grammar. Besides, the media that are used by the teacher cannot attract the students which only consist of huge number of slides with a lot of sentences. This research is aimed to improve the studentsÂ’ writing ability through Teaching Media PowToon in the Eleventh Grade Language Class of SMA Negeri 1 Malang academic year 2015-1016. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. It was conducted on May 2, 2016 until May 21, 2016. This research was typically adopting classroom action research which was done in two cycles, and each cycle consisted of four stages; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of the research were 6 students of Eleventh Grade Language Class of SMA Negeri 1 Malang. The data were derived from three techniques including interview, field notes, and test. The findings through the implementation of PowToon reflected that there was improvement of studentsÂ’ writing ability. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at the end of each cycle. It was found that the studentsÂ’ score gradually improved specifically when they wrote biography text on the second cycle. Then, the researcher found two weaknesses at the first cycle; those are: studentsÂ’ complaint related to the contents of PowToon which must be added by more examples questions on the slide, and studentsÂ’ difficulties in the mechanics errors at their writing product. Dealing with the weaknesses at the first cycle, the teacher used various PowToon slides which consisted of more cartoon animations and added up questions. In addition, the teacher would give the gift as a snack as the studentÂ’s reward. It was aimed to make the students to be more interested in writing by using PowToon and to be more active in the classroom. Besides, the researcher also conducted a pair work writing activity in the second cycle in order to make the students check their writing products from their friends. The research findings of this research implied that the implementation of teaching media PowToon could improve the studentsÂ’ writing skill and studentsÂ’ attitude toward writing in teaching and learning process. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) the English teachers apply PowToon in teaching and learning activity; (2) the students should practice writing and watch the video of PowToon; (3) other researchers be able use Powtoon in conducting research in other skills.
