Abstract

This research is designed to find the students' problems in reading comprehension skill taught at SMP Raden Fatah Batu. This research use descriptive qualitative research as its design. It was used by the researcher to identify and describe the students' problems in reading comprehension skill taught at SMP Raden Fatah Batu. Moreover, the subjects of this research were English teacher and fifteen students of VIIIA grade at SMP Raden Fatah Batu. In collecting the data, the researcher used himself as the primary research instrument and semi-structured interview as the secondary research instrument. In addition, the result of this research was written in the form of report. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that the students' problems in reading comprehension skill taught at SMP Raden Fatah Batu are (1) decoding problem, (2) comprehension problem, (3) retention problem, (4) mother tongue and (5) psychological factors. In decoding problem, the students are difficult to know the letters, read without expression, and have trouble sounding out the words and recognizing words out of context. In comprehension problem, the students have less vocabulary, difficult to understand the content of the passage includes identifying figurative language, main idea and drawing conclusion. In retention problems, the students are difficult in summarizing the passage with their own language. In mother tongue problems, the students are producing bad pronunciation. In psychological factors, the students are not interested in reading passage and have less motivation.
