Abstract

Keyword : teaching technique, vocabulary, crossword puzzle Vocabulary is a list of set of words for a particular language or a list of a set of words that individual speakers of language might use. In presenting English especially vocabulary, the teacher should be creative in choosing the materials, and able to stimulate the studentsÂ’ interest to reach the goal of learning. Therefore, to make the teaching and learning more interesting and easy to understand, the teacher should use some techniques of teaching effectively. The techniques should be suitable with studentÂ’s characteristics and conditions. One of techniques that can be used while teaching English Vocabulary is Crossword Puzzle. A word games like crossword puzzle games is commercially available and it is widely enjoyed. The aim of this research was to analyze and describe the implementing of crossword puzzle which happened in seventh grades of MTs Surya Buana Malang. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design to describe the phenomenon in vocabulary class. The researcher used qualitative research design based on the purposes of study that observed phenomenon in seventh grades. The data of this research was collected from the class observation and interview the English teacher. In addition, the data was displayed in the form of narrative. The result of observation and interview showed that the English teacher conducted five steps while implementing crossword puzzle. The steps were giving example and clue, making a group, asking students to choose words and to make a clue of it, asking students to make paper alphabet at home, and conducting crosscheck student`s sheet. Also, the researcher found some advantages of the use of crossword puzzle. The advantages were, understanding vocabulary easily, awakening students sense of competition, students felt enjoy and relax while learning English, students became more interactive, students were able to spell the word correctly, and students felt enthusiastic and exited.
