Abstract

Keyword : translation, problem, tense Translation means interpreting the source language (SL) text into the target language (TL). It is to ensure that the meaning and the structures of the TL will be approximately similar as the SL. Furthermore, the cores of translation are the delivery of message, meaning and idea from the source language to the target language. This study was focused on the tense problems in translating English into Indonesian text made by translation students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Furthermore, the problems were limited only on the tense problems. Moreover, it had two purposes; they were to identify the tense problems made by translation students in translating English into Indonesian text and also to find the most dominant tense problem. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative because it was intended to describe the tense problems in translating English into Indonesian text made by translation students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang and the most dominant tense problem made by translation students. The objects of this study were the translation products made by ten translation students who had been experienced in translation. This study used document analysis instrument which was translation products of translation students. The result of this study had shown that the researcher found some translation problems that were concerned in the tense problems. They were simple present, present perfect and simple future. Each of the tense problems had different frequency. From the total sentence problems which were 31 sentences, simple present took 7 sentence problems, simple future took 9 sentence problems, and present perfect took the rest and the most dominant problem which was 15 sentence problems. While in the view of the students, there are only two students who did not make any problems in this research, they were student 2 and 6. Furthermore, student 3, 5, 8, and 9 made 3 problems. Student 1, 7 and 10 made 4 problems. Then student 4 made the most dominant problem which is 7 problems.
