Abstract

Keyword : Grammar, Simple Sentence, Writing This study was conducted for the purpose of analyzing the errors and causes in simple sentence. This study was held on English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Qualitative research design was employed by the researcher in this study. Document and interview guide were the instruments applied by the researcher to collect the data. The document covered the result of mid test examination and semi or partially structured interview was provided to obtain the error causes The result of this study showed that some students made the errors in the form of omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Missing of to be, article, punctuation, subject, preposition and -es/s in regular nouns covered the errors of omission. Further, the errors of addition included infinitive, article and -ed in verb. Thus, the errors of misformation were located in the tenses use, punctuation, personal pronoun and subject-verb agreement. Then, the error of modifying noun and adverb were encountered in the errors of misordering. The researcher also found that interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning and communication strategies were the causes of error undergone by students in simple sentence. Interlingual transfer is affected by the first language possessed by the students. Then, Intralingual transfer deals with the structure of language being studied. Lack of implementation, the lecturerÂ’s explanation, and textbook involve the cause of context of learning. Lastly, the communication strategies are caused by the learning styles had by the students.
