Abstract

Keyword : Writing, Teaching technique, StudentsÂ’ responses, SMP 8 Muhammadiyah Batu. This study is focused on an analysis on teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching writing at the 1st year of SMP 8 Muhammadiyah Batu. The research design used in this study was qualitative because the purposes of this study are intended to describe the kinds of techniques used by the teacher, to describe the way the teacher uses the technique and to know studentsÂ’ response toward the technique uses by the teacher in teaching writing at the 1styear of SMP 8 Muhammadiyah Batu. The subjects of the study were an English teacher who applied the techniques in teaching writing and the 1styear students of SMP 8 Muhammadiyah Batu, VII-2 class with total number of students 30. The research findings showed that there were two techniques used by the teacher in teaching writing, namely technique in using pictures and technique in using controlled writing. The first technique was using pictures. The teacher showed the picture about animal. Brainstorming was done by the teacher while showing up the picture to the students, giving questions, answers, and let the students guess the key words. It purposed to help the students in elaborating their ideas into the text easier. The second technique was using controlled writing. In using controlled writing, the teacher explained about the procedure texts. She asked the students to make outline before they wrote procedure text as exemplified by the teacher. After they made the text, the teacher asked them to check the writing result, such as, connecting words, grammar, spelling and punctuation before submitting their writing result. The students generally had positive response toward the teaching techniques used by teacher. The teaching techniques used by teachers were effective to improve the studentsÂ’ writing ability, made them easier to understand the material, and helped them to write well. Also, the techniques could improve studentÂ’s vocabulary and grammar, and could increase the studentsÂ’ activity to write a text.
