Abstract

Keyword : Bilingualism, Code Mixing, Ranah 3 Warna, Ahmad Fuadi. Indonesia is one of countries whose people are multilinguals. Since it is a multilingual country, finding people who mix two or more languages within a sentence seems easy. The phenomenon of mixing languages within sentence boundaries is known as code mixing. Code mixing phenomenon can be found not only in spoken but also in written text such as novel. Here, the researcher intends to investigate the types of code mixing found in Ranah 3 Warna novel and revealing the authorÂ’s reasons behind the use of code mixing in his novel. This study uses a qualitative research design. Document analysis and interview are used as a way to obtain the necessary data. Here, the object of the study is Indonesian-English code mixing found in Ranah 3 Warna novel written by Ahmad Fuadi. The procedures of data analysis are classifying code mixing based on MusykenÂ’s code mixing typology, analyzing the interview script, correlating the authorsÂ’ reason to the reviewed theories and drawing conclusion based on the result of data analysis. The finding of the study showed that there are three patterns of code mixing called insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization found in Ranah 3 Warna novel. The reasons of the author in using code mixing are the authorÂ’s personal experience, strengthening the story setting, the need of dialogues and/or character to used foreign language and also code mixing is used as an approach in writing novel. Based on the research, the researcher concludes that code mixing is used by people consciously or unconsciously. It depends on the reasons or the triggers behind it. The researcher hopes that this research can be used as a reference by everyone who is studying code mixing.
