Abstract

Keyword : Teaching, Techniques, speaking, problem implementing teaching techniques. In English lesson, there are four skills to learn namely speaking, reading, writing and listening skill. Speaking is one of the important aspects in learning English because speaking is an important tool for communication. Moreover, to improve the ability of students in speaking teachers have to determine appropriate teaching techniques. Proper technique can affect the studentsÂ’ understanding in learning speaking. The purpose of the study were (1) to describe what kind of teaching techniques used by the English teacher of the 8th grade students at SMPN 2 Nganjuk, (2) to describe how the English teacher implemented the techniques, (3) to find what problems faced by the English teacher in implemented the teaching techniques, (4) to find how the English teacher coped with those problems. The research design of this study were descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught English in SMPN 2 Nganjuk. Moreover, in collecting the data the researcher used two instruments. The instrument were observation and interview. The data were analyzed descriptively. Based on the research findings, the teacher used three kinds of teaching techniques in teaching speaking for the 8th grade at SMPN 2 Nganjuk. They were story telling, role-play and picture describing. Furthermore, from two observation done by the researcher the teacher applied two teaching techniques in speaking which were role-play, story telling and picture describing. The research findings also presented the teacher experienced some problems during teaching process. They were studentÂ’s limited vocabulary, studentÂ’s self-confidence and use the same teaching techniques during teaching process that made students get bored. In coping with those problems, the teacher gave vocabulary building, giving reward point plus and added some games during teaching process.
