Abstract

Keyword : Speaking, Teaching Speaking, Teaching Strategies Speaking is the important part of learning English. It becomes the bridge to communicate with other people all over the world. However, in English language teaching, teaching speaking is not easy as we think. There are so many problems that may occur while getting students to speak English actively in the classroom. Consequently, since teaching speaking is not easy, the teacher should consider what kind of teaching strategy, method, teachnique, or even material that is appropriate for teaching English, especially for making the students be more active in speaking. The teacher should use the best strategy that can encourage and stimulate students’ activeness of speaking. The use of strategy should also be considered with the students’ needs or conditions. However, if good strategy does not match with the students’ needs, students’ condition, or students’ characteristics, so it will be useless for achieving the aim of teaching and learning. Thus, the teacher has to be able to create teaching and learning process which consist of methods, teachniques, also strategies that are appropriate with the students’ needs. The problems to be investigated are: (1) kinds of teaching strategies implemented by English teacher in speaking instructional activities (2) teacher’s ways in implementing the strategies (3) problems faced by teacher while taught using the strategies. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The subject was English teacher at SMP Aisyiyah Muhammadiyah 3 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guide, observation checklist and also fieldnotes. The data collection was started by developing research instruments such as interview guide, observation checklist, and fieldnote. Then conducting the research activities such as interviewing the teacher and observing the class. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showed that the English teacher used direct instructional strategy, interactive strategy, role play, simulation, and arranging the words into sentences strategy in teaching speaking. Meanwhile, the teacher implemented those strategies by asking students to read and simulate the dialogue ‘buying some foods’ to encourage their activeness in speaking. In implementing the strategies, the teacher faced some problems such as students’ lack of interest to learn English which was solved by playing the role and making the students interest to study, students’condition or students’ mood which had been solved by forming the group, and also unsufficient time to finish the teaching material in one meeting which had been solved by continuing the teaching material in the next meeting.
