Abstract

Literature is considered as the expression of people's thoughts, feelings and imaginations in beautiful language. Literature has great function in developing human's feelings, ideas, and interests. Literary works could be in the form poem, novel, drama or film. This study analyzed a film because film can be enjoyed audio visually. A "Freedom Writers" film is chosen to be analyzed because it is based on life which is showed by the main character Eva Benitez. In order to analyze "Freedom Writers" film, there are some purposes of this study. The purposes of this study were to explain the violence faced by Eva, to find out the causes of the violence and also to discover Eva overcome the violence as a student at Woodrow Wilson High School on Richard LaGravenese's film "Freedom Writers". This analysis was focused on violence faced by Eva as a student at Woodrow Wilson High School on Richard LaGravenese's film "Freedom Writers". The research applied descriptive qualitative design by collecting the data and reviewing literature which are relevant to the topic to prove research data. The technique used in this research is library research; meanwhile, the data were taken from the film itself. The approach used in this research was liberal humanism approach which focused on analyzing the main character as a student in this film. The finding of this analysis found the violence faced by Eva as a student, they are divided into separated section depending on races, insulting by other race in school, and being hit by her classmate. There were three causes of violence faced by Eva: not willing to contact with other races, a Black man want to snatch Eva's territory, and behaving as a dominant student. Then, it is followed by Eva overcome the violence as a student: being helped by her teacher, following her heart to say the truth, and stopped by the ringing bell.
