Abstract

Keyword : Teaching, Technique, Listening Listening has an important role in English lesson because it is one of four basic skills that needed for communication. If we do not understand what people say, definitely we cannot respond what the speaker talks about. The listening comprehension problems need to be solved by using an appropriate technique. By using an appropriate technique, the teacher will reach the goal in the teaching and learning activity. Thus, this study is made to investigate: (1) the techniques used by the teacher in teaching listening at the second year of SMP Nasional KPS Balikpapan, (2) the problems faced by the teacher in using the techniques, (3) the teacher�s solution to overcome the problems. This study used descriptive qualitative method because it was discovering and understanding the teacher�s experience using some techniques in teaching listening. The subject of this study was an English teacher at the second year of SMP Nasional KPS Balikpapan. Two instruments were used to collect the data in this study, they were: Observation and Interview. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was concluded that there were three stages in teaching listening: The Lead in Stage, The While Listening Stage, and The Post Listening Stage. In every stage the teacher applied techniques in teaching listening. In the Lead in stage, there were Give Students Clear Instruction, Help Students Create Expectation, and Teach Students Some Difficult Key Words. In the While Listening Stage, there were Watching Song Lyric Video, Adding New Vocabularies from The Song Lyric Video, and Deducing the Meaning of An Unknown Word from the Context. In the Post Listening Stage, there were Do a Review Using Guessing Game. The problems faced by the teacher in using the techniques were Students Lack of Vocabulary, Unsupporting Material, Students� Lack of Attention, and Limited Time for the Curriculum. Moreover, the teacher�s solutions to overcome the problems were Provide Some Key Words, Find the Right Material, Distract Their Attention, and Continue the Material in The Next Meeting. 09 Aug 201
